After the current struggles for the Indian team in the test format, Shubman Gill wants a favour from BCCI to keep India’s WTC 2027 journey alive and still believes that India is very much in the race to reach the final of the World Test Championship 2027. The last test series that India played was against South Africa, and it was at home. India lost the two-match series 2-0 at home, and there were many questions about the coach and the team.
The Indian cricket team has so far played a total of nine matches in their World Test Championship 2025-2027 journey. They have won four, lost four, and had a draw. The team is currently in sixth place with 48.15 PCT, which is surely something India is not used to after seeing the teams’ performances in the previous editions of the World Test Championship cycle. India are surely struggling and there are surely man reasons for it and batting has to be one of them recently.

Shubman Gill wants a favour from BCCI to keep India’s WTC 2027 journey alive
It has been more than 13 months since India faced humiliation in the test format as they were whitewashed twice, first by New Zealand and just recently by the South African team. The year 2026 is surely when Shubman Gill and his boys need to push the acceleration button if they want to go ahead in the World Test Championship journey in 2027. Shubman Gill, who was made the captain of the Indian team almost six months back after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, was a part of a new strategy for keeping India’s hope alive in the test format. According to reports by TOI, this is what a BCCI source has said:
Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before going into a Test series. There was an issue with the itinerary this season where the team didn’t have much time to prepare. Gill recommended to the Board that it would be ideal if there were 15-day red-ball camps before a Test series
Gill is showing assertive qualities now. He is presenting his vision to the selectors and BCCI with a lot more clarity. It augurs well for Indian cricket as there is a need for a strong captain after Rohit Sharma. The Test and ODI teams are Gill’s. It is important for him to have a bigger say
There may be instances where Gambhir will be busy with white-ball teams even as there may be a Test series approaching. The Board may use the services of CoE cricket head VVS Laxman to organise red-ball camps
Shubman Gill wants a 15-day prior training camp to be organised before India’s test matches from now on. The captain feels that the team needs to have proper and better preparation before the test series with the team. Basically, the year 2026 is full of white-ball cricket for the Indian team as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 first starts on the 7th of February in India and Sri Lanka.
As there are many white-ball cricket tournaments this year and the current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, would be busy with the team, India’s former legend VVS Laxman would be the one to organise training camps for the Indian team. This year, the Indian team plays two test series, and both of them are away from home. The first test series for India in 2026 will be against Sri Lanka in 2026 August as it will be a two-match series. Next up in October 2026, India will again play a two-match test series, and this time it will be against New Zealand.
