After Alyssa Healy announced that she will retire from international cricket after the Indian series, the question is, who will be the Australia Women’s team’s new captain? She has already said that she won’t be playing the T20I series as she wants the team to think about the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which she wouldn’t be a part of. Australia is set to have a new captain for the T20I series, who will later take a full-time role after the ODI series and one test match.
The Indian women’s team is scheduled to kick off their tour of Australia on 15 February. The tour will include three T20 Internationals, three One Day Internationals, and a single Test match between the two sides. Alyssa Healy will sit out the T20I series. Surely, there are a lot of candidates the Australian team can choose from to go ahead as their captain for the future.

Australia Women’s team’s new captain: Who can replace Alyssa Healy?
There are two sides that the Australian Board can look at before deciding on the new captain of the Women’s team. First, they can go with experience, which surely would help a team, as the experience the player brings to the table, but it will be a short period for them, as the options they have can hang up their boots soon. At the same time, they can look at the future and bring a young captain to the team who can hold the team for the next many years to come.
The very first and one of the strongest candidates for the board to select from is Ashleigh Gardner. The all-rounder is well-experienced and has a good chance of becoming the new Australian Women’s team captain. She is also leading the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League and the Gujarat Giants in the WPL. Another experienced candidate is Ellyse Perry. She is surely one of the best all-rounder Women’s cricket has seen. Perry has never captained the Australian team but has led more than 140 matches in the Women’s Big Bash League.
Phoebe Litchfield can be a captain for the future as she is still young and showed in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. This will be a gamble, but whether the board is ready for it will be a question. Tahlia McGrath, who is currently the vice-captain of the team from 2023, is also a strong candidate for the captaincy role. Her form is a big concern. Beth Mooney is also a choice for the board. She has some captaincy records in her resume. Beth Mooney captained the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League in 2025.
