Why will we not see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Vijay Hazare Trophy from the third round?

The main question is, why will we not see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Vijay Hazare Trophy from the third round after they played the first two matches? Both players played the first two matches but missed the match that happened today, which is on 29th December, 2025. Mumbai and Delhi both won their first two matches quite convincingly.

For the third round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai is all set to play against Chhattisgarh. The Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur is the venue for the match between Chhattisgarh and Mumbai. At the same time, Virat Kohli’s Delhi is all set to take on Saurashtra. The KSCA Cricket (2) Ground in Alur is the venue for the match between Delhi and Saurashtra.

Why will we not see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Vijay Hazare Trophy from the third round?

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have impressed in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Virat a bit more, to be honest. Rohit Sharma, in the first match, scored 155 runs in just 94 balls against Sikkim as the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur was the venue for the match. He scored a 62-ball century for Mumbai after returning to the team after almost seven years. The second match against Uttarakhand did not go as planned, as he got out for a golden duck.

At the match time, Virat Kohli also scored a century on his return to the Delhi team after almost 15 years. Virat Kohli scored a quickfire 131 runs in just 105 balls. He also completed 16,000 List-A runs in that game. The second match was against Gujarat, and Virat Kohli again impressed as he scored 77 runs in 61 balls. He broke a world record in that match as he surpassed Michael Bevan’s record for the average in List-A cricket with a minimum of 5000 runs.

It was decided from the start that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would play only two matches for their respective teams in the Vijay Hazare, as they would be joining the Indian team for their upcoming ODI series with the New Zealand team, which starts from the 11th of January 2026. We won’t be seeing them playing the T20I series as they already have announced their retirement from this format of the game in 2024 after winning the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.
