Chennai Super Kings’ IPL Auction Strategy: From Granddad’s army to Grandson’s army

Chennai Super Kings’ IPL Auction Strategy has been completely different from what they have been doing in the past editions of the Indian Premier League. A team that always believed in building the squad with the most experienced players has now completely focused on the youth, as they spent ₹28.4 crore on just two players, and that too, who are uncapped Indians, Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer.

The previous Indian Premier League season was surely one to forget as they finished in 10th position on the points table, just winning four matches out of the 14. They had to make changes, and they took a big step before the auction as they traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals and got in Sanju Samson, which was one of the signings we were expecting from the franchise.

Everyone in the auction and fans watching from home might be shocked as the Chennai Super Kings did not look very interested in buying players. In the first set of batters, they went all out on Cameron Green, which was expected, and Kolkata, who were their only competitors, had to purchase the player. Chennai Super Kings went on till the ₹25 crore mark before they decided to opt out of the fight. Eventually, Kolkata signed Cameron Green.

Akeal Hosein, the player from the West Indies, was the first player they purchased in the auction. All eyes were on the uncapped Indian category for the Chennai Super Kings management as they purchased the wicket-keeper batter Kartik Sharma for a whopping ₹14.2 crore, who can perfectly fit in the midfield. They need a player to replace Ravindra Jadeja, and they got one, but they had to pay ₹14.2 crore as they signed Prashant Veer. Now, the team that just had experienced players is full of youngsters, with a bunch of experienced players to guide them, such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

It was expected that they would go for Rahul Chahar, who went unsold when he came in the beginning. They purchased him for ₹5.2 crore. They later also purchased Matt Henry (₹2 crore), Prithvi Shaw (₹75 Lakhs), Mathew Short (₹1.5 crore), Zakary Foulkes (₹75 Lakhs), and Aman Khan (₹40 Lakhs).
